Episode 18: Iron Man

This week on the podcast, guest Ryan Steans and I find ourselves in a novel situation: talking about a movie that we actually like! We’re visiting the dawn of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, to see how Iron Man turned a promising young indie studio into a world-conquering money-spinner that’s become synonymous with the superhero genre.

Tune in to find out how Iron Man gets us to like the unlikeable, believe the unbelievable, and give in to the irresistible appeal of a character who shows up late for his own movie.

The podcast is available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, YouTube, Overcast, Audible and lots of other places. Come check it out!

A note for listeners: Following this chapter, I’ll be releasing new episodes every two weeks, instead of every week. Now you’ll have time to catch up on all the previous episodes!

  1. I guess the weekly shows were too good to last, though I listen out of “Danny fandom” more than out of any type of fandom of comic book movies. This movie, in particular, I didn’t enjoy in 2008 and can’t imagine revisiting even after your spirited discussion.

  2. There were a lot of positive reviews that persuaded me to see it in 2008 and I was disappointed. It wasn’t bad. I had just expected more because of the hype. I rewatched after listening to Danny and Ryan and I liked it better, possibly because I’ve seen the later movies and appreciate Iron Man more than I did originally. I had no idea who he was when I first saw it. I still wasn’t impressed by Paltrow. I don’t know what Pepper Potts is like in the comics but I didn’t believe her as the right-hand assistant of a billionaire genius. If her dialogue was improvised, that may be why.
I knew Favreau as an actor. I was surprised at how good a director he was. The movie looks good, it’s funny and Downey is excellent.
Also, it was refreshing that Danny did a podcast on a superhero movie that he actually liked. Watching Iron Man again, I realized just how much the MCU seems to have lost its way. And since Danny mentioned it, I will put special emphasis on Secret Invasion as part of that.
